What Is a UPI Gateway? QR and Intent Payments Explained

Understand how a UPI checkout works on websites and apps, where QR and intent fit, and why payment verification matters after the customer approves.

What Is a UPI Gateway? QR and Intent Payments Explained

When someone buys from a website or mobile app, the payment experience needs to do more than show a button. The customer must see who receives the money, approve the amount in a trusted UPI app, and return to an order that reflects the real payment result. A UPI Gateway is a common name for the technology that connects those steps for an online business.

That name is used loosely in the market. Some providers supply checkout screens and transaction routing; others also provide merchant onboarding, status APIs or broader payment aggregation services. Before choosing one, understand the actual flow and the provider's role.

UPI payment collection in an online checkout

UPI is India's instant payment system. A customer can use a compatible UPI app to approve a payment from a linked account. For a merchant website or app, the checkout commonly presents a QR payment option or a UPI intent option. NPCI lists QR, Intent, application-based and Collect as merchant integration modes. Availability of a particular mode depends on the provider, device and merchant setup.

The important distinction: payment instruction versus payment result

Showing a QR or opening a UPI app starts a payment attempt; it does not prove that money reached the merchant. Customers can cancel, lose connectivity or leave the app. A reliable checkout checks the provider's final transaction status and matches it to the correct order before granting access, shipping goods or crediting a balance. A screenshot from the customer should never be the sole confirmation.

How a QR Payment Gateway flow works

  1. The customer reviews an order on your website or app and chooses UPI QR.
  2. The checkout shows a QR with the merchant payment details. Some integrations may create a QR for each transaction; others use a static merchant QR. Ask which your provider uses and how an order is identified.
  3. On a second device, the customer scans the QR in a compatible UPI app, checks the payee and amount, and approves there.
  4. Your product waits for a trustworthy success, pending or failure result from the provider or merchant system.
  5. The order is fulfilled only after the result is confirmed and reconciled.

A QR can work particularly well when a customer views the checkout on a laptop and scans with a phone. On a single mobile device, scanning the screen with the same phone is awkward; offer an intent option or another supported fallback where appropriate.

How a UPI Intent Payment Gateway flow works

UPI intent is an app handoff. On a compatible phone, the checkout asks the operating system to open an installed UPI app with payment details. The customer still reviews the payee and amount and authorises payment inside that app. Your website or mobile app then needs a clear return path and independent status check.

Intent can reduce the need to type a UPI ID or move between devices. It is not a universal replacement for QR: supported apps, operating systems and browser behavior vary. A careful checkout offers a fallback and does not treat a return to the browser as proof of success.

Is a UPI Gateway the same as a payment aggregator?

No. The Reserve Bank of India describes a payment gateway as technology infrastructure that routes and facilitates an online payment transaction without handling funds. A payment aggregator has a different role in enabling merchants to accept payment instruments. Marketing names alone do not tell you the legal or operational model. Ask where the customer's money goes, who onboards the merchant and who is responsible for payment status and support.

JaduPe states that its technology connects supported existing merchant UPI IDs or QR codes and that it does not hold customer funds. Verify the current eligibility and contract terms directly with the service team before integrating.

What an online business should evaluate

  • Merchant compatibility: Is your existing merchant UPI account supported, and what documents are required?
  • Customer experience: What does desktop checkout show? What happens on a phone with no compatible UPI app?
  • Order matching: Is each payment reliably associated with the correct order or user?
  • Status handling: Are success, pending, cancelled and failed attempts surfaced through an API, webhook or another documented method?
  • Security: Do you verify provider callbacks and restrict who can change payment status?
  • Pricing: Is a “Free Payment Gateway” offer a short trial or a limited tier? Check validity, usage limits and paid terms.
  • Operations: How are refunds, disputes and reconciliation handled by the merchant and service provider?

Frequently asked questions

Can I use UPI QR on a website?

Yes, QR is a merchant integration mode. A website can show a QR for the customer to scan from a UPI app. The exact generation and confirmation method is set by the provider.

Does UPI intent work inside mobile apps?

It can, where the platform, installed UPI apps and provider integration support the handoff. Test return behavior and payment status on the devices your customers use.

Is the payment successful when the customer says they paid?

Only a reliable payment status check should decide that. A customer's statement, screenshot or app return is not enough to fulfil an order automatically.

Sources and next step

For the official integration modes and QR explanation, see the NPCI UPI FAQs. For the payment gateway and aggregator distinction, see the RBI payment terminology. If you are comparing a live service, review the provider's current features, merchant requirements and plan terms rather than relying on a label.
